Hurricane and storm surge warnings have been issued for Carolina coast. According to the National Hurricane Center, the now category 2 hurricane with winds of 125 mph is forecast to crawl up to the North Carolina coast late this week and turn slowly left to South Carolina. The Florence forecast announces an escalating degree of intensity: tropical-storm-force winds should strike North Carolina’s coast by noon Thursday, and hurricane-force winds and dangerous storm should surge by late Thursday or early Friday. Already more than a million people have been ordered to flee their homes. President Trump has approved emergency disaster declarations for the Carolinas and Virginia, which frees up funds for relief and recovery. A National Weather Service meteorologist insisted on the storm’s “potential for unbelievable damage from wind, storm surge, and inland flooding”. The relationship between climate change and hurricanes is not completely established but according to some studies published in the Journal of Climate this year and to some academic scientists, a warmed climate is more likely to cause more and more intense hurricanes.
