Fact of the day: Trump and the Wall on the South border

President-Elect Donald Trump delivered his first speech after the election in Cincinnati, Ohio, during which he thanked citizens of the state for helping him win the election. The president-elect also reiterated many of his campaign promises, which pleased some supporters who worried he could abandon his pledges. In particular, Trump once again discussed building a wall along the southern border.

The ostensible purpose of the event was to stress a message of national unity after a fractious campaign and to lay out a road map for Trump’s presidency. He notably reiterated his vows to build a wall on the border with Mexico, to restrict Muslim immigration into the US and to repeal and replace the Obamacare. He renewed his promise to prioritize American interests over the rest of the world and warned that the Monday knife attack at Ohio State University by a radicalized student, was the result of lax refugee policies backed by « stupid people. »; referring to the recent attack by a Somali student who injured 11 people.

He made clear he wanted to ensured the solving of the immigration issue; openly linking it to terrorism: ‘ We do not know who they are, where they come from, what they think, keep them out of the country. The violent atrocities at the University of Ohio demonstrates the security threat created by our very stupid programs on political refugees  ».

Two weeks after winning the challenge against Hillary Clinton, and after meeting Obama at the White House, it seemed that the idea of the Wall was over. Yet, during his first speech after the election, Donald Trump stressed his promise to erect a wall on the border with Mexico.
