#FactOfTheDay 07/09/2018 – Brazil : Number one candidate to presidential election stabbed in the street

Jair Bolsonaro has been stabbed in the street in the middle of the crowd during a gathering related to his campaign. The aggressor has been arrested right after by the police. The injury in the stomach caused serious internal condition but the life of Mr Bolsonaro is no longer in danger but a severe intestinal infection remains a threat. The front runner is currently head of the poll for next month election with 22 percent support. The reason for this aggression stays unclear however since the start of his controversial campaign, Bolsonaro raised many opponents because of his radical and far-right rhetoric. Indeed, the leader is known as the “brazilian Trump” for his positions anti LGBT, homophobic, racist and nationalist. Mr Bolsonaro is still on trial with the Supreme Court for statements promoting hatred.

Security issues and political violence are pretty common in Brazil but a case where the life of a candidate is endangered remains rare.
