#FactOfTheDay 30/11/18 Prohibition of ordinary educational violence: France catches up with the other countries of the European Union

On Friday, November 30, 2018, French deputies adopted almost unanimously the proposal for a law against ordinary educational violence (VEO). The law consists of two main articles: the first states that holders of parental authority may not « use physical or psychological violence » against their children ; the second provides for the production of a report to be submitted to Parliament, the purpose of which will be to establish the needs necessary for the proper application of the law.

France is in line with the 31 other member countries of the Council of Europe which, in 2018, banned all corporal punishment of children. Sweden is a pioneer in this area, adopting a similar law in 1979 and has particularly positive results on indicators of violence in society such as delinquency. It remains to be seen whether France will be able to observe similar results over time.
